What does the future of fashion look like? Could we grow our own clothes?

The following project is an experimentation in bio-materials, growing fabric from living microorganisms.

The method takes its inspiration from kombucha, and the work of Suzanne Lee, pioneer in the field of biocouture.

¿Cómo se vería el futuro de la moda? ¿Podríamos cultivar nuestra propia ropa?

El siguiente proyecto es una experimentación en bio-materiales, cultivando tejidos a partir de microorganismos. El método se inspira en la kombucha y en el trabajo de Suzanne Lee, pionera en el campo del biocouture.

The fabrication process consisted in an acidic culture liquid prepared by incorporating a mixture of bacteria, sugar and green tea. The bacteria feeds on the sugar and produces a membrane that grows with each passing day, to produce bacterial cellulose - a material that has similar properties to leather.

El proceso de fabricación consistió en un líquido de cultivo ácido preparado mediante la incorporación de una mezcla de bacterias, azúcar y té verde. La bacteria se alimenta del azúcar y produce una membrana que crece con cada día que pasa, para producir celulosa bacteriana, un material que tiene propiedades similares al cuero.

….Stage 1: creating the medium ..Etapa 1: creando el medio….

The liquid medium was created by brewing green tea in water, and adding sugar, a live kombucha culture and organic cider-vinegar. Different recipes were tested, some including beet pulp to color the material. The liquid was stored in a glass container, covered with a cloth and left to ferment at a temperature of 25 - 28 degrees celcius.

El medio líquido se creó a partir de una infusión de té verde en agua, agregando un cultivo de kombucha y vinagre de sidra orgánico. Se probaron diferentes recetas, algunas con pulpa de remolacha para dar color al material durante el crecimiento. El líquido se almacenó en un recipiente de vidrio, cubierto con un textil y se dejó fermentar a una temperatura de 25 a 28 grados centígrados.

After 10 days the culture showed signs of fermentation, with bubbles and a transparent skin appearing on the surface.

Después de 10 días, el cultivo mostró signos de fermentación, apareciendo burbujas y una piel transparente en la superficie.

Some of the samples started growing mold and even though they had to be discarded they show the beauty of natural patterns and accidents.

En algunas de las muestras comenzó a crecer moho y, aunque tuvieron que ser descartadas, muestran la belleza de los patrones naturales y los accidentes.

….Stage 3: coloring the fabric .. Etapa 3: tenido del textil….

After three weeks a thick layer of microbial cellulose is formed. The samples were taken out of the containers, and washed with cold soapy water.

The materials were dyed with natural pigments using turmeric powder, spirulina powder and beet extract.

Después de tres semanas se formó una capa gruesa de celulosa microbiana. Las muestras se sacaron de los contenedores y se lavaron con agua fría y jabón. El teñido de los materiales se hizo con pigmentos naturales usando polvo de cúrcuma, polvo de espirulina y extracto de remolacha.

….Stage 4: drying the fabric ..Etapa 4: secando el textil….

The samples were spread and dried on a wooden surface under the sunlight, resulting in leather-like materials with vibrant colors, which can then be cut and sewn like conventional fabrics.

Las muestras se extendieron y secaron sobre una superficie de madera bajo la luz del sol, dando como resultado materiales similares al cuero con colores vibrantes, que luego se pueden cortar y coser como textiles convencionales.
